The
ancient Egyptians, first domesticated cats 4,000 years ago. Not only
did they welcome the cat for protecting their grain, they actually
revered the cat. They developed cat cults and temple worship of the cat.
The
taste buds on a cat's tongue are specialized to detect the amino acids
in meats, but are less able than ours to detect the carbohydrates in
plants and grains.
Domestic
cats spend about 70% of their day sleeping and 15% of the day grooming.
Non-pedigree cats generally liver longer than pedigree cats. Cats were
domesticated about 3,000 B.C. in Egypt.
One
out of four households in America own at least one cat. There
are
an estimated 65.8 million cats in the U.S. compared to 54.9 million
dogs.
The
body temperature of a cat is between 38 and 39 °C (101 and
102.2
°F). A cat is considered febrile if it has a
temperature of
39.5 °C (103 °F) or greater, or hypothermic if less
than 37.5
°C (100 °F).
An adult cat has thirty teeth and
about twelve whiskers.
Did
you know?. It has been scientifically proven that owning cats is good
for our health and can decrease the occurrence of high blood pressure
and other illnesses.
If
your cat is near you, and her tail is quivering, this is the greatest
expression of love your cat can give you. If her
tail
starts thrashing, her mood has changed --- Time to distance yourself
from her.
The cat receives much respect in
Islam, because of tales that the
Prophet Mohammed was a cat lover. One story says a cat saved Mohammed
from being bitten by a deadly snake. In another, when Mohammed s cat
Muezza fell asleep on his sleeve, the Prophet cut off his sleeve rather
than disturb his cat.
Cats
are the only four-footed animal, with the exception of camels and
giraffes, that walk by moving their front and hind legs first on one
side and then the other. Only four cats really roar: lions, tigers,
leopards and jaguars.
Domestic
cats were brought to the North American continent by colonists to
protect their granaries from mice. As settlers moved west,
cats
went along in covered wagons.
Cats
usually weigh between 2.5 and 7 kg (5.5–16 pounds), although
some
breeds can exceed 11.3 kg (25 pounds). Some cats have been known to
reach up to 23 kg (50 pounds) due to overfeeding. This not healthy for
the cat, and should be prevented through diet and exercise (playing),
especially for cats living exclusively indoors.
Cats,
just like people, generally become fat because they eat too much and
don't get enough exercise. The fact is, cats who are spayed or neutered
live longer lives and make better companions. And they don't contribute
to the pet-overpopulation problem in this country, where millions of
unwanted cats and dogs are destroyed (killed) every year. There's no
need to wait until a female cat has had a litter to have her spayed; it
can be done before her first heat cycle. It can be done at 8 weeks old.
A cat's hearing is much more
sensitive than humans and dogs.
Your
cat loves you and can "read" your moods. If you're sad or
under
stress, you may also notice a difference in your cat's behavior.
The
first cat show was held in London's Crystal Palace in 1871. Nowadays,
over 75,000 cats (and their owners) claw for top honors at the more
than 300 cat shows held in the United States every year.
A
cat s eyes glow green or gold when you shine a light in them because
the light is reflected from a layer of mirror-like cells called the
tapetum lucidum, just behind the retina. These cells help cats see in
very low light, by reflecting all available light back into the retina.
A
cat’s teeth, from newborn kitten to the largest lion, are the
most awesome weapons in the mammal kingdom They are very sharp, and
finely serrated like a knife. The curved, pointed canines are set in
the cat’s jaw so that the molars fit together with their
sides
intact, like a pair of scissors, rather than tooth to tooth, as is the
case with humans and most other mammals.
Most cats pull in their claws while
walking on rough ground.
This helps keeps the claws sharp.
Reason
for the "meow" can vary. Cats can call out to indicate pain,
request human attention (to be fed or played with, for example), or
even as a greeting. Cats can be very vocal, yet others rarely call out.
Cats are capable of as many as 100 different vocalizations, compared to
about 10 for dogs.
Cats
are domestic animals because they live in the home. They crave human
companionship and establish loving bonds with their human families.
They may not always show it, but that's just the feline way. If you
spend little time with kitty, you'll never know the rewarding -- and
very special relationship that comes from making a cat a true member of
the family.
A female cat will be pregnant for
approximately 9 weeks or between 62 and 65 days from conception to
delivery.
Give
your cat a quality scratching post to deter her from scratching your
furniture. Still scratching? Try putting lemon
scent or
orange scent on the area. Cats hate these smells.
The Persian is the most popular breed
of cat, followed by the Siamese and the Maine Coon Cat.
With
powerful leg muscles, especially in their hind legs, the domestic cat
has been known to reach running speeds of up to twenty-five miles an
hour. A frightened cat can run up to 30 mph -- while the fastest human
can only run up to 27.89 mph.
The cat's tail is used to maintain
balance.
The average litter of kittens is
between 2 - 6 kittens
A cat will almost never "meow" at
another cat. This sound is reserved for humans.
A
falling cat will always right itself in a precise order.
First
the head will rotate, then the spine will twist and the rear legs will
align, then the cat will arch its back to lessen the impact of the
landing.
The
richest cat in the Guinness Book of World Records is a pair of cats who
inherited $415,000 in the early '60s. The richest single cat
is a
white alley cat who inherited $250,000. (Now that will buy a
lot
of catnip!) |
